Top Ten (Pt 3)

I have been sharing the Top Ten Things Every Pastor Wished Their Congregation Knew, but Was Afraid to Tell Them. Here is number 8:

8. I don’t always hear clearly from the Lord. That is why I need godly elders and board members, and patient, gracious church members. – Gal 2.11; 1Cor 12.18-20

Peter was one of the twelve apostles, he was one of the inner three that were closest to Jesus, yet in Galatians 2:11 Paul says that “when Cephas [that’s Peter] came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned.” Peter stood condemned. No one is infallible. Not even the Apostles. When they wrote the Scriptures by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit they wrote infallibly, without error. But the rest of the time, they were just people.

I’ve heard people say, “You don’t have temptations like we do. You’re a pastor.” Sometimes it’s said in jest, but I’ve heard it many times from people who actually believe that somehow a pastor has special power that isn’t available to anyone else. The truth is, we’re all just people, and sometimes we don’t hear clearly from the Lord.

1 Corinthians 12:18-20 says, “But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, yet one body.” Your pastor needs the rest of the Body. What he senses God saying is tested against what the rest of the Body of Christ is hearing from God. No pastor is infallible. He needs godly leaders in the church to help him discern God’s leading. As Pastor, I don’t always hear clearly from the Lord. That is why I need godly elders and board members, and patient, gracious church members.
