Romans 10 (Pt 2)

Romans 10:11-13 (ESV)

[11] For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” [12] For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. [13] For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Our world is crying for equality. Take from the rich and give to the poor. Treat those who have been privileged with prejudice while giving privilege to those who have been treated with prejudice. This is the world’s view of equality, but it doesn’t work. It doesn’t bring equality. There will always be those elite who have while the rest of the world does not have. There will always be prejudice as long as there are people. Transferring prejudice from one group to another does not do away with prejudice, nor does it erase the history of prejudice. True equality is found not in transfer of goods or privilege, but in transformation of the heart. True equality is found in the gospel.

“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” It doesn’t matter what color you are. It doesn’t matter what language you speak, what country you live in, nor what nationality you can trace your lineage to. Apart from Christ we are all lost, broken, and helpless. The invitation goes out freely to all. Anyone may come. The Law differentiated between Jew and Gentile but grace makes no distinction. The Law demanded complete obedience. Grace says, “Come as you are.” The Law was incapable of changing anyone’s heart. The gospel says, “Come as you are and let God’s grace transform you from the inside out.” True equality is found at the foot of the cross.
