Contentment - 1 Timothy 6:8-9

1 Timothy 6:8-9 (ESV)

But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.

Contentment – It seems that the more we have the less content we are. I had a friend who would see a nice truck and say, “I wish I had that truck, and he had a better one.” But there is the conundrum. If “he” had a better truck, then my friend would want that one. It seems that the more we have the more we want. We have not learned to be content.

I have been grieved to read almost weekly of another pastor who has fallen to immorality, abusive power, or mishandling funds. All of that is the result of a lack of contentment. We have fallen for the lie of the enemy that something or someone out there will make me happy. It is easy to point out the big failures, but what about ourselves? Do we live content with food and clothing, or are we driven to have something better, something bigger, another tool, another toy, another appliance, a bigger house, a better car – and the list goes on and on. May God forgive us. May we learn with Paul to be content with little that we might serve with pure hearts and clean hands.
