Drawn away by trivialities - 1 Timothy 6:20-21

1 Timothy 6:20-21 (ESV)

O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you. Avoid the irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called “knowledge,” for by professing it some have swerved from the faith. Grace be with you.

With the words above Paul finishes his first letter to Pastor Timothy. He has warned Timothy of two grave errors. One is the love of riches that distracts and draws away from the faith. The other is a fascination with arguing over words and minor details. There is an arrogance in some that separates them from other believers because others are “blind” to the great insight they have through the “correct” interpretation of a particular word. I recently read an article that claimed that our Bible translations were wrong because the translated Yeshua as Jesus. It implied that if we were wrong about that, what other mistakes might we have made. It a silly argument. Every pastor I know will tell you that the name Jesus is Iesous, which is the Greek version of the Hebrew name Yeshua and means YHWH or Jehovah is savior. There is no mistake or mistranslation there and arguing over things like that distract us from the truth of the gospel that has been entrusted to us. Timothy was to guard the deposit entrusted to him. That deposit seems to be the body of truth he had been taught, particularly the gospel and the holiness of life that flows out of it. Let’s not get caught up in trivialities that feed our ego, nor money and stuff that feed our flesh. Rather let us find our contentment in Christ and rest in his truth.
