Salt as Fertilizer

I was reading in Keller and Inazu’s book Uncommon Ground this morning. One chapter referenced salt as a fertilizer and applied it to the Christian life. The chapter indicated that when the Bible talks about believers as salt, it is not just talking about preservation, but also fertilization. We are to bring life to our communities. I Googled “salt as fertilizer,” and found this interesting article: https://dengarden.com/gardening/Sea-Salt-Fertilizers-Important-Organic-Gardening-Discovery. The article indicates nine benefits of sea salt as fertilizer. That changes my thinking about Matthew 5:13, “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.” As believers, we do not just preserve and flavor. Our presence and ministry encourage growth and health. Reflect on that a bit. What might that look like in your community?
