Titus 1:2 - Hope

Titus 1:2 (ESV)

in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began

The promise of eternal life is based on a promise of God that precedes creation itself. That promise is sure because God is a god who never lies. Hope is a word that we use to indicate expectation with uncertainty, but Paul’s use of that word was exactly the opposite. It was an expectation with absolute certainty. That certainty was rooted in the very nature and character of God. He never lies. The Greek and Roman gods were immoral liars, drunkards, and manipulators. They were simply exaggerations of the very people who worshipped them. By contrast, the God of the Bible is honest and trustworthy, sober, good, holy, and approachable. For believers, our hope is sure. The gospel which accords with godliness (see verse 1) is presented with a certainty of eternal life because God never lies. That is an expectation that changes everything in terms of our perspective of this life. Let us live in light of that great certainty.
