Malachi 3:6 (ESV)
“For I the LORD do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are
not consumed.
Verse 5 says that God is coming for judgment. That is followed by this
promise in verse 6, “you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.” The promise
is certain because, “I the LORD do not change.” LORD is God’s covenant name. It
indicates his faithfulness to his word. Here he reminds Malachi’s audience of
this truth. YHWH (LORD), the covenant keeping God is unchanging, therefore his
promises can be trusted. One commentator observed that a rule is only as good
as the person who makes it. God is coming with judgment, but his unchanging
nature assures Israel of their preservation. Similarly, it reminds Christians of
God’s unchanging promises to never leave us or forsake us, to accept us because
of his own sacrifice on our behalf. As Lamentations 3:22 reminds us, “The
steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end.”
Even in the midst of the LORD’s discipline we are assured of his mercy and
love. Count on it.
