Psalms 46:10 (ESV)
“Be still, and
know that I am God.
I will be exalted
among the nations,
I will be exalted
in the earth!”
I have often
referred to this verse in reference to being still before God, listening, waiting
before him. And I think that is appropriate, but the context brings a more
significant meaning. To be still in this verse is the opposite of panicking.
The psalm talks about the nations raging, the earth shaking and melting. It is
a time when people flee for shelter. They panic and run in all directions not
knowing where they are going nor what they are fleeing. Yet God brings peace.
He stops wars. He guards those who are his. When trauma arises, when panic
begins to set in, when fear grips our hearts, it is then that God calls us to
stop, be still, and remember that our shelter is in God. It is not in nations,
kings, swords—it is not in walls, defense systems, or natural defenses. Those
things all fail. Our shelter is in God. He will be exalted for he is the LORD
of Hosts, and he is our fortress, our defense.
