Luke 10:21 (ESV)
In that same hour he rejoiced in
the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that
you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them
to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.
There are two separate but
foundational truths here. The first is the truth of the Trinity. Jesus, the
Son, rejoices in the Holy Spirit and gives thanks to the Father. All three persons
of the Triune God are present in this verse. The only way to explain this without
belief in the truth that God is three but one is to say that Jesus is not God,
and that Holy Spirit and the Father are two different names for the same
person. But Jesus is God, the Holy Spirit is God, and the Father is God, yet
there is one God. There is a mystery here that is beyond our comprehension, and
as believers we need to be okay with mystery.
The second foundational truth is
that God does not reveal himself to us because of how great we are. People are
constantly seeking significance, yet God is no respecter of persons. He does
not choose us, use us, or reveal himself to us because we have achieved some
level of greatness. In verse 34 Jesus told his disciples that prophets and kings
had desired to see and hear what they were experiencing and had not had that
privilege. Here was a ragtag bunch of uneducated fishermen, a Jewish Zealot,
and a Jewish sellout tax collector. Yet they had the honor of not only seeing
Jesus’ power but exercising it themselves when he sent them out. God does not
call the great, we are great because we are called.
