Luke 19:41 (ESV)
And when he drew near and saw the
city, he wept over it,
The passage goes on to describe
the destruction coming to Jerusalem because they rejected their king. As Jesus considers
this he weeps. The IVP New Testament Commentary concludes its commentary on
this paragraph by say, “What was true of the Jewish nation can also be true of
individuals. To miss Jesus is to miss the time of visitation and face
accountability before God.”
As I contemplated this passage the
question came to mind, Do I care as much about unbelievers who will face God’s
judgment as Jesus cared about Jerusalem? Do I weep over those who do not follow
Christ, or do I fear them? Do I pray for those who are lost, or do I ignore
them? Do I look for opportunities to connect with and share the love of Christ
with those outside the church, or do I avoid them? Jesus rode into Jerusalem
knowing that he was headed to the cross, yet he wept for Jerusalem, not for
himself. What if, instead of condemning the lost around us, we wept more for
them? Might that not be the heart of Jesus?
