Titus 1:2-3 - A Truth from Before Time

Titus 1:2-3 (ESV)

in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began and at the proper time manifested in his word through the preaching with which I have been entrusted by the command of God our Savior;

The hope of eternal life that was promised by God before time began was made clear through preaching. There is so much in these two verses. To whom did God make the promise if it was made before time began? Why did he wait so long to reveal the plan? How was it manifested or made clear and visible through preaching? So many questions. The easy answer is that the promise was made to himself within the Trinity. Why did he wait so long? That I can’t say except to say that God does not get in a hurry. He is working his plan that was established before he ever breathed life into Adam. What is interesting about verse three is that the very first word in the sentence is “manifested” or made clear and visible. That is the force of this verse. Manifested it was. Made clear and visible it was. The truth of the gospel came into focus as God’s servants proclaimed it to the world. In fact, it is this very gospel and the proclamation of it that we as believers have been entrusted with. When we speak the truth of the gospel, we are speaking a truth established before time began, before the ages began. That’s a huge trust. What are we doing with it?
