Titus 3:7-8 (ESV)
so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according
to the hope of eternal life. The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to
insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful
to devote themselves to good works. These things are excellent and profitable
for people.
You’ve heard the saying, “He was so heavenly minded he was of no earthy
good.” The reality is they can’t be separated. Paul challenges Titus to “insist
on” the truth that believers have “become heirs to the hope of eternal life.” That
is the hope of the gospel. Yet the purpose for insisting on this truth of being
heirs of eternal life is “so that. . .” There is a reason, a purpose for being
heavenly minded. The “so that” is revealing. Believers are to be heavenly
minded so that they are “careful to devote themselves to good works.” Good works
do not earn God’s favor. Good works flow out of God’s favor. One cannot be
heavenly minded without being of earthly good. Good works here on earth are the
natural outcome of being heavenly minded. Never separate the two.
