Luke 12:32-34 (ESV)
[32] “Fear not, little flock, for
it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. [33] Sell your
possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do
not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief
approaches and no moth destroys. [34] For where your treasure is, there will
your heart be also.
Jesus is not telling us to sell
our home and live on the street, nor is he saying that it is sinful to own a
home, but renting is okay. When we make these applications, we are moving into
the area of legalism which he taught against. He is saying, however, that our
obsession with financial stability and amassing stuff is the very opposite of
what he is calling us to. The moneybags that do not grow old, the bank accounts
that are never overdrawn, the stuff that no one can steal are those that we store
up in heaven.
I met a missionary recently who
knows she is living on borrowed time because of a health issue. She has built
an incredible ministry impacting hundreds, maybe thousands. It’s a ministry no
longer dependent on her to continue. She has done this in a country that is
opposed to the gospel. It’s an incredible story. Many would say to her, “You need
to stay home and guard your health. You need to be near your family. Make the
most out of the years you have left.” But she is storing up treasure in Heaven,
while we obsess over stock reports, security systems, credit scores, and bank
balances. Maybe God would do more through us if we were less earthly minded and
more kingdom focused.
