Luke 12:43-45 (ESV)
[43] Blessed is that servant whom
his master will find so doing when he comes. [44] Truly, I say to you, he will
set him over all his possessions. [45] But if that servant says to himself, ‘My
master is delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants,
and to eat and drink and get drunk,
Jesus had just told a story
indicating that we need to be ready and watching for his return. Peter then
asks if that applies to them or if it is for somebody else. Jesus responds by
talking how servants should serve. Abusive leadership is one of the signs of not
watching for the master’s return.
The servant was set over all the
master’s possessions. We, as believers in Jesus Christ, have been given the
responsibility of representing his kingdom on this earth. We are stewards of
the gospel. And as church leaders we are stewards of his church. The presence
of so much abuse of leadership in churches and ministries today indicates to me
that we have lost sight of His return and bought into unhealthy forms of
leadership. The bottom line is that we are stewards who will answer to the
master. We must never lose sight of that truth.
