Luke 21:5-6 (ESV)
[5] And while some were speaking
of the temple, how it was adorned with noble stones and offerings, he said, [6]
“As for these things that you see, the days will come when there will not be
left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”
People were impressed with the
temple and everything connected to it. But Jesus warned them not to be too
impressed. The temple wouldn’t stand. Walking through some of the cathedrals of
Europe is impressive, but many of them are spiritually empty and dead. We may
not have the most impressive buildings, but let’s be honest, we love our
traditions and we’re comfortable with the way things are. We recently built a sound/AV
booth at the back of our sanctuary. That required moving seats. Nobody grumbled
when they had to sit somewhere new. That’s actually pretty incredible.
We tend to idealize and even idolize
our current settings. We are comfortable with them. Change means stress. But
none of this is eternal. None of this is going to last. Like the temple that
fell in 70A.D. all that we have, all that we see, all that we highly value in
this life will turn to dust. That’s what Jesus was trying to tell his
disciples. “You are impressed with what man has built? It will all turn to
dust.” Wars are coming. Tumult is coming. Stress is coming, but don’t be terrified.
Trust God. All this must happen, but the end will not come immediately. Let go
of your emotional ties to buildings and traditions, and trust God through the
changes.
